Documentary Proposal

Working Title: The Dangerous Sport/ Love of Danger

Topic: Ice Hockey and the dangers of the sport.

Type of Documentary: The documentary will consist of interviews, archive footage and voiceover.

Demographic Audience: The demographic audience for the documentary will be ice hockey and sports enthusiasts as well as non-enthusiasts who are just generally interested in other opinions and the real danger. The target age will be 12+ due to the nature of some footage.

Running Time: 10 minutes

Documentary outline:

The documentary will be based around the dangers of Ice Hockey and why so many people play it and support it even though injures that could be sustained are life threatening. It will be mainly focused on the fans and players however there will also be non-fan opinions on the topic. The short documentary will start off with archive footage of past accidents and facts about injuries. It will then move on to players, fans and non-fans opinions and why the player do take the risks playing it. The fans and players section will also include any stories of worst accidents they've seen or been part of.

Research Methods:

Secondary and primary research will be used to collect the archive material needed for the documentary. The main archive material will be video. This will be collected through media formats such as YouTube and social media. Video content will also be collected by myself by visiting clubs. This content won't be archive instead it will be training footage or clips from games.

Interviews will be another form of primary research I will conduct. Interviews will be from fans, non-fans and players. The fans interviews will be filmed outside the ice rinks before and after games. The player's interviews will be more formal. They will be sat down and the only object in view. The audio for these interviews will also be clearer.

Another form of primary research will be use will be to collect location information. I will search for and visit appropriate locations for interviews. Due to the ice rinks being owned by someone research into finding the relevant contacts to get permission to film onsite and to gain access to players will need to be conducted.

Facts and figures are another form of data that will be collected by primary research. Facts and figures about past accidents and how often an injury could occur will be research for the opening scene.

I will also be gathering audience research. The main method used to collect this data will be qualitative research. I will be using questionnaires and secondary data to see how popular the documentary would be and also researching to see if there are existing documentaries on the same topic and see what reception they achieved.
